Bio

Joe Kake was born in Brazil. In the late 90s he moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he began his work in photography at the FotoIncena Agency, as a black & white photographic laboratory technician.
In 1999 he went to Europe for the first time. In 2006 he moved to Berlin, where he learnt German and began his studies at the „ NEUE SCHULE FÜR FOTOGRAFIE BERLIN“.
The human body and its identity are central themes of Joe Kake's oeuvre. He mostly uses natural light for his works, and is reluctant in employing Photoshop.
Kake’s fashion editorials focus on the models. Each time they create an atmosphere that provides the model with a new identity, even if just for a moment.
Kake chooses to use the format of photographic portraiture, because he has always seen the fashion image as a picture. In this way he can focus the human being at the centre of his work, through which he tries to understand the world and himself. Kake claims: “It is through the other that I know who I am”.
Beauty is his eternal aim and focus. He believes, “There is no pleasure, creation or desire to go on without beauty”.
